This is indeed a very rare find - here in New Mexico a unique variety of quartz crystal known for its "sprouting" or "split growth" habit, where smaller crystals grow outwards from the faces of a larger crystal, resembling the layered petals of an artichoke. It's also called "sprouting quartz" or "sprossenquarz" and forms due to irregular growth conditions, often found with impurities or Hollandite. # 531
