Calcite and Halite Mineral Specimen - New Mexico ~

They are distinguishable by taste, with halite being

salty and calcite tasteless, and by acid reaction, where calcite fizzes

in dilute acid while halite does not. Physically, halite forms perfect cubes,

whereas calcite typically forms rhombohedrons. Calcite is slightly harder

(3 on the Mohs scale) than halite (2.5), and halite dissolves readily

in water, while calcite does not.
