Halite and calcite are distinct minerals that can be differentiated by their
properties. Halite, commonly known as rock salt, is sodium chloride
(NaCl) and has a salty taste. It forms cubic crystals and is easily scratched
by a fingernail (Mohs hardness of 2-2.5). Calcite, on the other hand, is
calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and does not have a salty taste.
It forms rhombohedral crystals and can be scratched by a penny
(Mohs hardness of 3).
