MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE:

The physical properties of red quartz are the same as those of quartz [silicon dioxide,

SiO2], with the exception of its diagnostic, orange-red-to-reddish colors, which are caused

by a uniform coating of particulate hematite [iron oxide, Fe2O3].

Red quartz is similar to tangerine quartz

Pure quartz,

traditionally called rock crystal or clear quartz,

is colorless and transparent or translucent and has often been used for hardstone carvings,

such as the Lothair Crystal. Common colored varieties include citrine, rose quartz,

amethyst, smoky quartz, milky quartz, and others.
